In Neon Genesis Evangelion, the Angels were attacking humans in a race to see which species would get to heaven, or so my understanding of it was. The last Angel, Tabris, was supposed to be the hardest to defeat, and if humanity could stop Tabris from reaching Adam, then they would be worthy to evolve into the form that would carry them to God. Born on the same day as the Second Impact, Kaoru was taken by Seele and raised to be the 5th Child in accordance to the Dead Sea Scrolls. Seele then used him to infiltrate Nerv and Force
Nerv to enact Seele's plan for forced evolution. Kaoru did infiltrate Nerv, but in doing so he formed a special bond with Shinji... however, as the last angel he was destined to find Adam or die trying, so he took EVA#02 and went to where he believed Adam was. Instead of Adam, he found Lilith, and realizing the trick fate and the humans had done to him, he realized that humanity did deserve to evolve, and let Shinji kill him and fulfill the Dead Sea Scrolls.
Soon after his coming, however, he began his attack. Because his synchro-rate
with the EVAs was so high, he could pilot them without even getting into the
entry plug. With Eva-02 as his body guard he slowly made his way to Heaven's
Door and Terminal Dogma in the heart of NERV HQ. While an enraged Shinji and
Eva-01 attacked Eva-02, Tabris realized that he had been duped by SEELE
when he finally saw the white giant pinned to the cross above the lake of LCL.
Fate: When Kaoru realized that the Angel that he was face to face with was Lillith and not Adam (the one whom all Angels must return) he allowed Shinji to grab him with Eva-01. He explained that he would allow himself to die so that mankind could decide for itself the path that must be chosen.
